Microgreens

Tips #

Things to know:

– Microgreen seeds require complete darkness to germinate.

– Seeds will only attach to the microgreen pad after they have sprouted roots. Ungerminated seeds will detach from the pad when placed in totam planter.

– The germination time is typically around 2 days in darkness and 1-2 weeks of growth in full light. Times vary depending on the type of plant grown.

– You can increase the harvest size by using the microgreen cover to apply weight to the seeds, this causes the roots to penetrate the pad more quickly and deeply. The full process will be explained below.

Inserting the Pad #

1️⃣ Thread the top of the pad through one side of the microgreen tray, this will become the top of the microgreen tray.

2️⃣ Fold the pad underneath toward the centre

3️⃣ Leave the gap at the bottom of the microgreen pad for drainage.

Leave the gap open at the bottom of the tray. This is the pad drain.

Seeding #

1️⃣ Place the microgreen tray with attached pad under running cold water, until the pad is completely wet.

2️⃣ Fill the water tray with water to the inner ledge (about half way), or partially fill a suitable plate with raised edges with water.

3️⃣ Lower the microgreen tray on to the water tray/plate.

4️⃣ Spread seeds over the microgreen pad according to seed packet recommendations. Do not over-seed (broccoli raab seeds for reference below). Avoid spreading a lot of seeds around the pad edges, especially the top.

5️⃣ Spray the seeds with the ‘mister’ bottle provided (using tap water).

6️⃣ Place the cover over the seeded microgreen tray.

7️⃣ Optional: Fill the cover with water or a tin to add weight to the seeds.

Growing #

The length of the growth phase is dependent on plant type but should generally take 1-2 weeks.

Harvesting #

Some plant types can be cut and regrown for a second growth cycle (e.g. wheatgrass). You can harvest all at once, continually during growth, or transfer the microgreen tray to the water tray to be sustained for a few days outside of totam planter. If you choose to do this, refill the water tray daily.
